Field experiments, conducted from 1991 to 1994, generated information on weed seedbank emergence for 22 site-years from Ohio to Colorado and Minnesota to Missouri. Early spring seedbank densities were estimated through direct extraction of viable seeds from soil cores. Emerged seedlings were recorded periodically, as were daily values for air and soil temperature, and precipitation. Percentages of weed seedbanks that emerged as seedlings were calculated from seedbank and seedling data for each species, and relationships between seedbank emergence and microclimatic variables were sought. Fifteen species were found in 3 or more site-years. Average emergence percentages (and coefficients of variation) of these species were as follows: giant foxtail, 31.2 (84%); velvetleaf, 28.2 (66); kochia, 25.7 (79); Pennsylvania smartweed, 25.1 (65); common purslane, 15.4 (135); common ragweed, 15.0 (110); green foxtail, 8.5 (72); wild proso millet, 6.6 (104); hairy nightshade, 5.2 (62); common sunflower, 5.0 (26); yellow foxtail, 3.4 (67); pigweed species, 3.3 (103); common lambsquarters, 2.7 (111); wild buckwheat, 2.5 (63), and prostrate knotweed, 0.6 (79). Variation among site-years, for some species, could be attributed to microclimate variables thought to induce secondary dormancy in spring. For example, total seasonal emergence percentage of giant foxtail was related positively to the 1st date at which average daily soil temperature at 5 to 10 cm soil depth reached 16 C. Thus, if soil warmed before mid April, secondary dormancy was induced and few seedlings emerged, whereas many seedlings emerged if soil remained cool until June.

Cu(In,Ga)Se2 (CIGS) photovoltaic absorbers frequently develop Ga gradients during growth. These gradients vary as a function of growth recipe, and are important to device performance. Prediction of Ga profiles using classic diffusion equations is not possible because In and Ga atoms occupy the same lattice sites and thus diffuse interdependently, and there is not yet a detailed experimental knowledge of the chemical potential as a function of composition that describes this interaction. We show how diffusion equations can be modified to account for site sharing between In and Ga atoms. The analysis has been implemented in an Excel spreadsheet, and outputs predicted Cu, In, and Ga profiles for entered deposition recipes. A single set of diffusion coefficients and activation energies are chosen, such that simulated elemental profiles track with published data and those from this study. Extent and limits of agreement between elemental profiles predicted from the growth recipes and the spreadsheet tool are demonstrated.

From a direct comparison, we find that filament channels are more easily detected in He I λ1083 than in Hλ, particularly for polar crown filaments. He I 1083 nm filament channels appear to coincide with the outer boundaries of Yohkoh/SXT X-ray cavities.

A method to separate the active region and quiet network components of the magnetic fields in the photosphere is described and compared with the corresponding measurements of the He I λ 10830 absorption. The relation between the total He I absorption and total magnetic flux in active regions is roughly linear and differs between cycles 21 and 22. There appears to no relation between these two quantities in areas outside of active regions. The total He I absorption in the quiet Sun (comprised of network, filaments, and coronal holes) exceeds that in active regions at all times during the cycle. As a whole, active regions of cycle 22 appear to be less complex than the active regions of cycle 21, hinting at one possible cause for a differing relation between spectral-irradiance variations and the underlying magnetic flux for these two cycles.

Measurements of the total microwavef emission from the solar disc at single and multiple wavelengths provide a useful indicator of solar activity, and correlate well with other indices of solar activity and with solar luminosity.
Since activity in the solar atmosphere is driven by the emergence, redistribution and disappearance of magnetic flux, the close and linear correspondence between the microwave flux densities, as observed at 10.7 and 21 cm wavelengths, provide a convenient and objective indicator of solar magnetic activity.
Microwave emissions from the “non-flaring” solar corona originate in a wide range of sources. These generally lie in active regions, and comprise two main types: bright, compact sources a few arc-seconds across and brightness temperatures of the order of 106K, and weaker, diffuse sources arc-minutes in size and having brightness temperatures of about 104K. There is also evidence of a weaker, widespread emission covering large areas of the solar disc. The compact sources are probably due to gyroresonance, although some could be non-thermal. The diffuse widespread emission are almost certainly free-free thermal emission from plasma concentrations in the corona.
The strong correlation between the 10.7 cm flux and other activity indices, even when they are produced by disimilar processes and at different heights in the solar atmosphere, may at least partially be due to the overiding role played by magnetic activity in dictating the structure of the chromosphere and corona. However, the consistent correspondences over wide ranges of activity suggest dependences upon relatively few quantities and that the microwave emission from the non-flaring Sun is dominated by a single process, which is closely and simply-related to density and temperature, such as free-free (bremsstrahlung) emission from plasma concentrations trapped in coronal and chromospheric magnetic structures. Attempts to “budget” the total microwave emission at 2.8, 10.7 and 21 cm wavelengths suggest that this is the case.
Where ambient magnetic fields exceed 3000/λ Gauss, gyroresonance can produce much higher optical depths than free-free emission, and accounts for the bright emission observed in the vicinity of sunspots. Although not the dominant contributor to the total emission from the solar disc, these sources stand out brightly in high-resolution maps of active regions.
To examine the assumptions of dominance of free-free thermal emission, and simple dependences upon few parameters, we compute the spectrum for a range of coronal density models, and compare the results with observations. The agreement is good, suggesting that the total disc flux is dominated by thermal, free-free emission, and that the intensity is controlled mainly by the density at the base of the corona, but is otherwise fairly tolerant of the density model used.

Characteristics and the emergence pattern of bipolar active regions are investigated using NSO/KP full disk magnetograms. Discussed in this paper are two samples of newly emerged bipolar regions: 9492 ephemeral regions and 978 active regions. Their distributions in size, latitude, and orientation are compared. It is concluded that ephemeral regions are the small scale end of a wide spectrum of active regions.
